## 7th Grade CC Math Vocabulary/Concepts

__Unit 1 Words - The Number System (Rational Numbers)__Rational Numbers - numbers that can be expressed as one integer, a, divided by another integer, b. Integers, fractions, and their decimal equivalents

Integers - positive and negative whole numers {...-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3...}

Whole Numbers - Natural Numbers with zero {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ....}

Natural Numbers - aka Counting Numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, ....}

Opposites - same distance from zero on a number line, but in different directions

Absolute Value - a number's distance from zero on a number line

Zero Pair - the sum value of a positive and negative is zero

Algorithm - a set of rules from performing a procedure

Addition Algorithm - If the signs are the same, add the absolute values and keep the sign.

If the signs are different, subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the greater absolute value.

Subtraction Algorithm - subtracting a positive is the same as adding a negative

subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive

Multiplication/Division Algorithm

Commutative Property - the other of the addition or multiplication of two numbers does not change the result. For two numbers,

*a*and

*b*,

*a+b*=

*b*+

*a*and

*a**

*b*=

*b**

*a*.

Additive Identity Property - Adding zero to any rational number results in a sum identical to the original ration number. For any rational number

*a*,

*a*+ 0 =

*a*

Additive Inverse Property - two numbers,

*a*and

*b*, that satisfy the equation

*a*+

*b*= 0. For example, 3 and -3 are additive inverses, and so are 1/2 and -1/2.

Distributive Property

Order of Operations

__Unit 2 Words - Proportional Reasoning__Ratio - a comparison of two quantities by division

Proportion - two equal ratios, typically written as two equal fractions

Scale Factor - a number which scales, or multiplies, some number to get another number

Part-to-part ratio - a relationship between one part of a whole, to another part of a whole

Part-to-whole ratio - a relationship between one part of a whole, to the whole amount

Rate - a ratio which compares two different units

Constant of Proportionality - the constant multiplier; the amount you multiply the independent variable by to get the dependent variable [in a proportional relationship]

Unit Rate - rate in which one of the amounts is 1 (typically the denominator)

Tax - a fee charged by a government on a product, income, or activity

Commission - an amount of money, typically a set percentage of the value involved, paid to ?an agent in a commercial transaction

Markup - the amount added to the cost price of goods to cover overhead and profit

Tip - the amount added on to the cost of a meal to compensate a server for waiting on you

Discount - the amount subtracted from the price of an item to get the new selling price
